Evaluation question 1

Evaluation question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? 

From the opening scene you can see that we have used a range of camera angles to show the boy as nothing special and to make him look just like a normal boy. This was to insure that our audience could relate to him and so relate to our film. We also didn’t want the audience to think that he was already a superhero and so made sure that he just looked like a normal guy in a normal setting. This is a very conventional opening to many superhero movies as they are often just normal people who become superheros much like Peter Parker from Spiderman and are set in none extraordinary locations like in towns and cities. Our first location is outside in the middle of nowhere which is quite different to many superhero movies as they are normally set in crowded areas although like most superhero movies the character is by themselves when they get their power. We also don’t include any background music so it just make you think he is living a normal life and just had the Digetic sound in the background but through the voice over and the word my name is “John Walker and this is my story”.The audience instantly know that this is from his past and something important will happen. The voice over goes on throughout the video opening and we got this idea from the iron man 3 second trailer.

By watching this clip we got a lot of good ideas and decided to have short voice overs on all of our scenes just like the iron man 3 trailer. Instantly after the first voice over ends in our film you hear a bang which is the meteor breaking through the atmosphere and is then seen shooting through the sky. This will get the audience thinking what is going to happen and keep them entertained. This is quite unlike most opening scene as they normally tell you more about the person before a big event in the move happens however not many open talking about the past which makes ours different and unique to many other superhero movies.  

In our scene where we find part of the meteor in the ditch created by the  crash from the meteor we do quick cuts between camera angels before stopping on Eyeline of the character as he picks up the meteor. We got this idea from the film chronicle which is filmed partly through a camera one of the guys is holding and thought we could take the idea behind some of their scenes and use it in our own when picking up part of the meteor this idea we felt would be good as it would relate more to our audience as most teenagers and young adults all have their smart phones with them and so would likely film something like a meteor with their phones and so we tried to make it look like this. We also used the camera through my eyeline when I wake up the next morning and switch camera angels when running home to make it look more professional.

It is when I’m running home that you first see my powers and you can see that my power is to go through walls. This is a power which isn’t a popular one and so is quite new and unique and hasn’t been featured as a power in many movies. It is featured slightly in the xmen 2 movie but the character isn't a main character but is quite popular in the comic books. 

We also used lighting to show moods in our film and in the very last scene you see that we had a dark room with the voice over on top before a bright light is shined on my face with a slight sinister smile on my face showing I could be a villain this is similar to interrogation scenes that are normally set in dark rooms where a bright light is shined on the face of someone being interrogated and so our audience may think my character has done something wrong or is in trouble. The idea of a hero becoming a villain is something never seen in movies and hasn't been featured in many comic books and so we thought it would be a good idea as its new and unique to our film.
The trailer are also going on throughout the film and the opening trailer is portal production which is in a comic book style of writing and shows that the film is going to be a superhero movie. this is quite similar to how marvel open their movies with the comic book strip followed by marvel in a comic book font.
We also have credits going on throughout and the font of those credits is different to our starting font as it looks rocky and so foreshadows the meteor coming down in the movie and also has a slight glow which make it look like it has some sort of chemical on the meteor which may be what gave me the powers. This is quite similar to many superhero movies as the credits normally are similar to powers in the movie. 
Special effect are used throughout or film as it was needed in our film to help make the story run and to create the effect of our superhero. This is conventional to all superhero movies as all rely on special effect to give their superheros their powers as the movie wouldn't work without them. 
There are also a range of things we could have done differently for example we could have chose to do a superpower that people are more familiar with and one that had been scene in movies before. if we had done this we would of had to show the use of his power as much and could have got straight into a fight scene that people may have found more interesting. We could have also done less about him getting the powers from the meteor and showed more about him with his powers to make it more entertaining and also show the audience more things he could do with his powers.

We decided the best software to edit on for use was videopad video editpro professional as this we thought was the best and one of the easy ones to use. We also found that it was the best for adding lots of special effect to our film and this was very worth wile as it made our film look very good and the superhero power looked better than I thought it would have been.

Evaluation Question 7 looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt lots more since doing my preliminary task and most of these stills I have learnt since have helped massively to finish my finally piece.

Mise en scene is one thing I have improved on since my preliminary task which was set in a school location without much thought. For my film opening I have learned that it is massively important to have the character dressed correctly for their role and to have a great location that suits what is happening in the scene. We took lots of time to find a perfect location for our film opening and had to find an area that looked like a meteor had hit and we found a forest that had a great opening which had a ditch that looked perfect for our meteor crash site. We also made sure that the character looked the part and like a normal teenage guy where clothes similar to what teens today wear and is wearing the common high street brands often seen worn by teenagers.

We also put a lot more care into the camera angels we used and made sure we used detailed angles to keep the movie looking fresh and interesting and so included camera angles from the characters point of view. We did this when picking up the meteor and also filmed a dark scene which led to a bright light on my face to add mystery to the character.

Editing was probably the thing improved on the most in our film opening. In our preliminary task we had some little cuts and added music. However our film opening had lots of clever fades and cuts to make our character look like he had the superpowers. It took us a long time to finish all the editing but it was defiantly worth it.

We also did a lot more detail on the titles as we felt that it needed to match the quality of our whole video and we also made sure we added each role people played in the film and had to do research that we didn’t do in the preliminary task to find out what order the credits should go in.

Planning was another big thing that we did much more of in our final piece than we did with or preliminary task as we felt it was much more important to make sure we had everything planned out to try to make sure no mistakes would be made and to also all have an idea of what it was we would be doing.

this is our finished AS media film opening called quantum. It is about a teenage boy who finds a meteor and is given powers from the meteor. The move is about how he chooses to use his powers and what he will do with them.

Editing

 we decided we would use the editing software videopad video editpro professional because we felt that had the best editing techniques for our film and it was also easy to use and made our clip look professional . Editing is a big part of the film opening for us as without it our film opening will not work very well as we need to edit it to get the powers and for the meteor to fall through the sky. Without us editing well we will have to probably re film some clips and change the story slightly. Hopefully we should be able to edit it to a good standard so it looks professional and makes the movie look good.






We have now almost finished editing and have edited our whole clip and done a range of voice overs to put other the top of each scene. we have also done our own credits and used photoshop to edit them and have put them in our movie opening throughout so our audience don't get bored through watching a credit scene. All that is left to do is find a good piece of music to add on the end that is quite dark but has a beat to it.

Credits

 Instead of having all the credits at the end of the clip or beginning of the movie we will have them throughout so the audience don't find the credits boring and will find them much ore entertaining if they happen throughout the movie opening. An example of when they will appear is out of the meteor when it is coming to crash down and in the pit the meteor is in we think this will look good because we could use a font to make them look slightly like rock so they look as if they have fallen from the meteor and fit in with the opening.
We will have the cast,cameraman and editor appear first followed by music. After this we will have the directors and finally the production company. We have chose to have them like this because of our research into credits in superhero movies. We found from our research into superhero movies that they are often set out like this and so we will attempt to follow this structure.  

sound

we have now decide that we will do a voice over throughout the opening instead of having a constant soundtrack we feel this will be more suited for our movie opening as it is a superhero movie and most superhero movie have a soundtrack only when something big is happening on scene and because our superhero movie isn't going to have any big action we decided to have a voice over instead.
we have also looked on jamendo for any short bits of sound that we could put In our piece and found two good sounds.One was for when we wake up in the meteor sight the next morning and for this scene we were going to have birds tweeting like atypical morning. We also found a darkish one for our final scene where i put on a balaclava and walk out the bank this would set the mood and show that he is become a darker character. however the clips we were going to use have copyright which mean we cant legally use them without buying them because of this we are now looking for equivalents for our scene and have found one that is a lot like the bird tweeting and doesn't have copyright which mean we can use it. we are also thinking of having a short soundtrack on our credits just so the audience doesn't get to bored

risk assessment

for our film opening there are some risks because our film is partly outside and when we filmed there was snow and mud. we also had to do scenes where i fall over and so had to make sure i fell safely.
most of the risks were when we were filming outside as it was quite slippery with the snow and mud so we had to be careful to not fall over and hurt ourselves. this was mostly important in the scene where i picked up the meteor because i had to faint and when i first tried this i slipped going backward up a hill but wasn't hurt. We decided from this we could change the scene to have it just as the camera going backwards which would mean i wouldn't need to fall back and risk injury. There is also scenes that involve me running up hills that are very muddy and when we tried this i was slipping quite a lot and so we decided i could run slowly and then speed it up in editing. there was also some risks where i trip to fall through the door we did this also quite slowly as we knew we could speed it up in editing. when filming me falling through the door from the inside we also had to be quite careful as the first time i tried i hit my head on the stairs as there wasn't much room to fall. i eventually managed to fall slowly and still make it look believable. After we had done these scene most he risky scene had been finished and so we could film however we wanted to but still being careful not to break the camera.  

Script

I have started to think of a script to use as a voice over for our movie opening. it will be the character taking about his past and the experiences he has had. I  am doing the voice over and will talk about whats happening on screen.
this is out first script idea.

 I was just a normal boy once, until the meteor came.
I don't know why i ran to it i just did.
Everything was a blur till i woke up the next morning.
all i remember then was running home
that's when i found what had happened to me.
i learnt how to use my powers.
but i don't no why i did it.
i just felt i could.

these sentences will be put over certain scenes to add effect to the movie and to show that this happened in the past and show that the movie opening is actually a memory from the past.
we also aim for it have a similar effect to the trailer of iron man 3 which you can see in one of my previous blogs.

Weather forcast

From This weather forecasts you can see that it has been a very cold month that we have filmed in and we have had a range of weather throughout the month. The first day we filmed was on the 6th and on that day filmed some of the scene where i go to the meteor but it was very foggy and we didn't know how well you would be able to see us in the film opening. We then filmed the on the 7th but all the fog had cleared so we decided that it would be best to start filming again and got to the part where i passed out until the next morning. We filmed the next scene on the 13th and it had snowed that night which meant that there was snow on the ground. This didn't matter however because in the clip it was a new day and so it didn't matter if it didn't look the same as it did previously.We filmed on the 17th next and this was a sunny day and so we filmed the scene where i go through the door and filmed most of where I'm inside getting use to my powers. We finished of most of the scene on the 21st and have about finsihed but just need to film the scene where i put on a balaclava and go to a bank. we haven't been able to film this yet dew to the snow but plan to film it soon.   

Location

Our film opening is going to be set in 3 locations.
The first loctaion is set in a forest and this is going to take up most of the film as it is where the meteor will land. The first day filming it the forest was sunny but the ground was very muddy and we managed to film up to the part where I faint because I pick up part of the meteor. The next part of filming was still very sunny but there was snow that hasd fallen the night before and so the ground was very muddy as the snow was melting makeing the dirty wet and muddy. this however was okay because when i faint i dont wake up to the next morning which could mean that the scene didnt have to look to much like the day before ans so could look like snow had fallen in the night when i had been asleep.

The next scene is going to be filmed inside a house that shows that the superhero is just a normal boy and makes the movie opening look more realitic. In this scene i run home after i have woken up the next morning. As i run home i trip on the door and fall through the door to the floor on the other side. This is when i discover my power and start to think about what to do with it. we will then have a edit that says 2 weeks later and shows me still thinking about my powers but then looking at a bank leaflet which then cuts to a scene of me outside a bank going to steal from it.
This leads onto the next location which is outside a bank. The bank looks like a very old and steriotypical bank that we thought would look better than just a new moden day one. This scene will have a overshoulder shot of me which will show me looking towards the bank it will then cut to a close up of me putting on a balaclava and walking toward the camera and out of the shot which ends the movie.  

Our target audience

Our target audience will be around the age of 16-20. We have picked this age group as we feel these will be the group that will find our movie opening the most interesting.The research I have done into superhero movies and the Audience they attract shows that it is 18-29 year old who watch the most superhero movie and this group and 16-18 are the groups that also give superhero movies the highest ratings. This should mean that if we target this age group as our target audience they will enjoy the movie opening and find it entertaining.

Filming

We have now almost finished our clip and have done most of the inside scene. we have also added a clip where you see me using my powers to walk through a wall and show that i have got us to my powers. we have one more little scene to do where i look a newspaper and see a bank leaflet inside which gives me the idea that i can use my powers to rob from a bank and get away with it as long as i don't get caught. In the scene we have done we have a mid shot camera Angle of me walking through wall. For the scene where i go to steel from a bank we will have an over shoulder shot of me putting on the balaclava which will turn to a mid shot of me walking toward the camera which cuts to a close up and ends with me walking out of the scene. 

Our superheroes costume

Unlike most superheroes our superhero has no costume and is just a normal boy as he has only just got his powers and so doesn't really know what to do with his powers and so doesn't have a costume. however when he goes to the bank he is wearing a dark hooded jacket and balaclava to hide his face and shows to the audience that he may actually be a villain. We are planning to get a balaclava like the one on the left to put on when going to rob from the bank to hide his Identity and this will also show that he may be more of a dark character.

  Our superhero is a lot like spider man when he made his first superhero costume as like our superhero he only recently got his powers and so didn't know what to do with them and also like our superhero he went after money and new he could get money by winning a wrestling competition. He then learns to be good and that is when he makes his proper costume and this could be a similar story with our hero.

Classifications

 

these are the classifications given to films and from this we can see what each one means. most superhero films are 12s or 15s as they can contain violence and language inappropriate for children you can see from the image of the movie avengers that it was a 12 and it also says at the back of the case why it is rated 12. From this we can decide what we want or superhero movie to be about and we have decided to have the age of 12 for our movie as it doesn't have any inappropriate language but will have violent scenes that are not suitable for children.  

Sound

The iron man 3 trailer has a continues voice over which has given me and idea for our sound in our film opening, which like iron man is also about superheros. I think if we had someone talking over the film clip we could have it so the person that gets the powers is talking about the experience of getting the powers and talk about what happened to him that gave him the powers. This can happen throughout the opening until it cuts to the current time and he is stood outside a bank putting on a balaclava looking like he is about to rob the bank which will give the audience a cliff hanger and makes them realise that he is actually a villain.

Filming

We have now filmed up to the scene where I have woken up the morning after I picked up the piece of meteor. in this scene I wake up and we have a shot of the blue sky from my eye line and it looks like I have just opened my eyes in the morning. It then goes to an eye line shot of me looking around not knowing whats happened and then you see a range of shots of me starting to run home to try to figure out what happened to me.The next scene we need to do after this is where I trip through the door and discover my powers and then go to the bank which will be filming soon.

This Website has lists of what films are coming out soon and also has a list of all up coming superhero movies that are going to be coming out this year. This website also has lots of information about the movies coming out and has the storyline of each of the movies. It also will have links to trailers when the trailer is officially out. This is good for our group because we can do lots of research on films coming out and get some ideas from the story lines of the films. We can also watch the trailers to see what camera angles and sound fx they use to get ideas and think about sound fx and camera angles we could use. It also has feed back from fans and you can see what people think about the upcoming movies and if they think it is going to be good or not This attracts an audience because they will like the fact they can give their opinion on the movies coming out and can vote to say if they would see the movie it or not. it is also very easy to find so people will be able to find it easily and find out news about the latest superhero movies that may not be on other websites.   

This is the official websites for iron man 3 and on the website has all the latest information on the movie. It has the trailers and information on iron man 3 and also a gallery hat is constantly being updated. This is good for fans of the iron man movies as they can see what the movie is looking like and by looking at photos and video clips the website is getting the fans interested and making them want to see the movie even more. It also has links to a facebook and youtube page which has lots of videos open and also gives the audience the chance to comment and tell them how they feel about the new film and if they think they will what it or not.   

Filming

We have now started filming an have gotten up to the part where the boy finds the meteorite. we first started filming when it was foggy but the second day of filming it wasn't foggy so we decided to restart so it doesn't look different in the background in each scene. We have kept most of it the same but changed the part where I fall down a big pit made by the meteor. We now have a scene where I go into the pit the meteor created and pick up a piece of the meteor which then makes me faint. We changed this because we couldn't find a pit that look big enough and we also couldn't figure out a clever way to film the scene. We should be on track and filming again soon and we will hopefully have lots of time to edit the film because that will be one of the biggest part of our film opening.

Peoples views on our film opening

Plot
Our basic plot was that a meteor was going to be crashing down to earth and a boy happened to see the meteor coming down and ran over to where it crashed. When he went over to the meteorite he was going to fall down the ditch made by the meteor crash and get knocked out by the meteor on the floor. When he wakes up it was morning and he runs home to tell his parents. When he gets to his door step he trips and falls through the door and onto the floor in his house. He then realises that he has developed the power to go through objects and is thinking about what to do with the power. He looks at the table and sees a leaflet for a bank and he then decides that he can rob a bank and get away with it.
Comments

• 3 people said that they liked the superheroes power because it was quite original and they thought it would be good to see a superhero that doesn't have the stereotypical super strenght and flight powers.
• One person said that it will only work if we get the character right and need to make sure he looks real and the actor acts professional
• Most of the people liked the fact we planned to use a lot of special effects to make it look professional and they thought that would make it look like a professional film opening.
• 3 people thought that it was very good and they couldn't give us any advise ON how to improve it as it was already detailed and should be good.
• 2 people said they like how its a normal everyday person gets the super powers and like how it seems like it could happen to anyone in real life.
• 4 people said that meteors are often in films and that we could work on the originality of that.
• 2 people said that it may be to much like a science fiction film but also said that a lot of superhero films have bits of sci-fi in them but we shouldn't go over the top.

Film Opening idea

We were asked to do a presentation to the class and talk about or film opening idea. The aim was to get feedback from the group as we would get a good mixture of feedback as we have girls and boys in the group who all had different feelings about the opening idea. These can be seen in my blog in another post. Instead of doing a PowerPoint or just talking to the group we came up with a prezi as we thought it would look good and our blogs and show some skill.

Storyboard

This is our first story board and we have just planned out all the scenes and what is going to be happening in the scenes.

In the first scene we will be having a boy walking home through a wooded area. He looks to the sky and sees a meteor falling through the sky. We will be having some credits in this scene and they will be flying of the meteor. We have a range of ideas of how we will be doing the meteor scene and we have decide to edit it in or make it out of plasticine. we will be doing tracking shots, close ups and rolling shots the tarcking shot and close up of the boy will take around 10-15 seconds and the close up will also be seen from a low angle shot to see the meteor in the background.

The boy turns around and watches the meteor fall from space and it goes over the hill and when it hits the ground and crashes the ground shakes and the boy falls down. We will also have credits in this scene as well and they will be near the meteor when it crashes. For this scene we will have tilt shots and close ups of the boy when he falls.We will also be having a tracking shot of the meteor in this scene and it will be seen through the boys eyeline making it look like its scene by him.This scene will take around 15 seconds to film.
Shot 3
In this scene the boy walks over to try to find the meteor and walks around trying to find it. In this seen we will have credits around the forest area on the trees and stuff. we will also have tracking and rolling shots with him walking and edit it to look like the clip is seen through his eye line. this scene will have tracking shots following the boy as he looks for the meteor and should take around 10 seconds.

 In this scene the boy goes to the meteor and falls down the pit created by the meteor and is knocked out. In this scene we will have tilt shots, close ups of the boy and a crane shot looking over him when he is knocked out. we will also edit in this scene and get a bright light appear at the end of the scene as a fade out. This is one of the biggest scenes in our piece and so will take about 15-20 seconds depending on what editing we use and will have a 5 second shot of him looking at a piece of meteor.

In this scene the boy wakes up the next morning with the meteor gone. It will have a range of camera angles in the scene. We will have super close ups of the boys eye as he wakes up and a shot through his eye line of the sky. We will also have a range of close ups of the meteor sight and the boy. This scene should take around 15 seconds.

later he walks home and trips on his doorstep and goes through his door and falls on the flour. He then realises that he has the powers to go through walls. In this seen we will have Tracking shots and have lots of editing to make it look real. this scene should only take about 10 seconds and will show the audince the boys power.

This scene shows us the boy trying out his new powers and wonders how he will use them. There will be a range of close ups and mid shots to show the expression of what the boy is thinking.This scene will only take about 5-10 seconds depending on if we show him using his powers alot or not.

In this scene the boy is still wondering what to do with his powers, he then glances at the table and sees a newspaper, on the front he notices a picture of the local bank in town, he now knows what to do. There will be shots from the boys perspective when looking at the newspaper, also a low angle shot looking up at the boy has he picks up the newspaper and then looking at his perspective again and then zoom into the picture. In this scene it will take about 30 seconds to film because we have lots of camera angles throughtout which will take some time.

It then zooms out and the boy is outside the bank and putting on a balaclava and we will have a over the shoulder shot looking at the bank and the boy walking towards it looking like he is going to rob the bank. This scene is a big one because it can show to the audince that our superhero may be a villian and will take about 10-15 seconds to film.   

Marvel and DC

Marvel started in 1939 as Timely Publications and in the 1950s was known as Atlas comics. In 1961 marvel started to make its name in the comic book industry with its most popular superheros which are also the most popular today such as spider man,the Xmen, Thor, hulk and so on.  They didn't always only just do superhero comics as they also did some comedy based comics in the 1970s .The first movie based on a superhero in marvel was made in 1944 and it was a captain America movie. They also did a movie all about Howard the duck who was a popular marvel comic books character but wasn't a superhero. In all the latest marvel movies Stan lee who was one of the creators of marvel has appeared in all the films. marvel has always been a big well known comic book company and has a revenue of 125.7 million dollars and in 2009 was bought for 4 billion dollars by Disney. Marvel as have three movies coming out this year.

                                                   

DC started in 1934 and like marvel is on of the biggest comic book companies and marvel and dc both make up more than 80% of the comic book market. Like Marvel DC have slot of well know superheros like Superman, Batman,green lantern and so on. DC did their first movie in 1951and was superman and the mole man. DC is owned by Warner bros entertainment and bought them in 1969. DC still concentrates more on the comic book than the movies where as marvel is making a lot more movie than DC who have only got one coming out this year.   

If our film was made into a big movie I think we should be produced by DC as its movies are normally quite dark and so will fit in with our story as it is quite dark and shows our hero as a dark figure instead of the normally superhero that saves the day and so will fit in with the batman movies done by marvel and the watchmen movie.

 Avengers has an average rating of 8.3 on the IMDb website and has been rated by 463,897 and is 50th in the top movies this week. From the image above which shows the views of the Avengers and how many people have rated it on the IMDb website, you can see that a lot more men have seen and rated the clip than women however the men appear to have been more critical of the film and have only given it an average of 8.2 where as the women have given it a average rating of 8.4.You can see that it is most popular with people under the ages of 18 and the people older don't rate it as highly because they may be comparing it to the original comics which the younger people don't no much about. However you can see that all years seem to like it as none have voted lower that 7.5 and most have voted in the 8.0s which gives it an average of 8.3 showing it must be a good film which i agree with as I though it was very entertaining and answered lots of questions about the superheros but could have had a better final battle scene.

     These ratings are very similar to the avengers and so show that most superhero movies attract a similar audience and you can see that they all attract mainly males but the females they do attract rate it higher. The target market for superhero movies is 18-29 year old and so we will have to set our movies opening around them which may be hard ads we are 16-17 years old but our age group still rate the superhero movies highly and so will focus on attracting 16- 20 year old so that we can know what they find interesting.avenges and the dark knight rises also both have a similar average rating although the dark Knight has a slightly higher rating of 8.6 where as avengers has a rating of 8.3. both movies are also very different because they avengers are more stereotypical superheros unlike batman who can be dark at times but still a hero like our character. Even though they are both different they still attract the same audience which shows that younger people are the people that find superhero movies the most interesting and so this will be our target audience.

Unlike the avengers and the dark knight rises the green lantern got a bad rating and only got an average rating of 5.8 which is bad compared to the other two films. you can also see that the unlike the over movies I have done the women and males rated it the same and this film has also got far fewer votes than the over films which shows that it was a poor film and not many people wanted to comment on it. Unlike most superhero films it was more popular with older people and this may be because the younger people are comparing it to better superhero movies. This may be something we have to think about because we need to make sure we have a good enough opening to compete and entertain the audience like the avengers and dark knight movies. This will mean we have to be able to entertain the audience and interest them and not mess up like the green lantern movie did.
